A joke. A smile. A dance move. As a radiation therapist, Toni Hulin uses all these techniques and more to put patients at ease.
“My hope is that I can help them forget for even a moment that they have cancer,” she says.
For her natural ability to make our patients feel comfortable, as well as her dedication to her team and our patients, Hulin is August’s Heart of MD Anderson.
A personal approach
Most patients treated by Hulin receive total body radiation for cutaneous lymphoma. For these patients, treatments can last 45 minutes or more and require patients to change positions often. Sometimes, their skin lesions are so debilitating that it’s difficult for them to stand for the whole treatment.
“Toni’s skill really shines with how she helps these fragile patients,” says Chelsea Pinnix, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor, Radiation Oncology.
Hulin’s patience, positive attitude and willingness to help meet each patient where they are physically and mentally make all the difference in their experience.
“They’re not just patient names on a schedule to her,” says Travis Rougeau, radiation therapist, Proton Therapy Center Radiation Oncology. “She treats our patients on a personal level.”
Patients appreciate her approach.
Recently, a patient delayed his last day of treatment so that Hulin could be the one to administer it and see him ring the bell to celebrate the end of his radiation treatment.
Commitment to excellence
“Her commitment to excellence is there no matter who is around or what the circumstances are that day,” says Pinnix. “She inspires everyone to go above and beyond for our patients.
Hulin has been known to visit with some of our most acute patients in our inpatient units to assess their ability to withstand the complex treatment regimens.
“She always goes the extra mile,” says Ivy Robinson, clinical supervisor, Radiation Oncology – Therapy. “No one asks her to do this, but Toni knows that in the end, it makes things better for our patients.”
In addition to our patients, Hulin’s dedication spills over to her co-workers.
“Whenever you need her, she’s there for you,” says Bouthaina Dabaja, M.D., associate professor, Radiation Oncology. “I think she’s one of the best therapists we’ve ever had.”
Hulin’s inspiration to do her best comes back to our patients.
“The patients make me want to come to work each day,” says Hulin. “I want to keep striving to do better for them.”
